Get Your AC Ready for the Carolina Summer: A Homeowner Checklist

In Fort Mill, the air conditioner does the heavy lifting from May well into September. The worst time to find out it’s struggling is the first 95-degree afternoon, when every HVAC company in the county is slammed. A little spring prep goes a long way. Here’s a homeowner-friendly checklist to get your system ready.

Replace the air filter

This is the single easiest thing you can do, and it’s the one most people forget. A clogged filter chokes airflow, makes the system work harder, and can freeze the coil. Check it monthly during cooling season and swap it when it looks dirty.

Clear the outdoor unit

Over winter, the condenser unit outside collects leaves, grass clippings, and pollen — and we get plenty of pollen here. Cut back any plants within about two feet of it and gently rinse the fins with a garden hose (power off first). The unit needs to breathe to dump heat.

Test it before you need it

On a mild day, turn the system to cool and set the thermostat a few degrees below room temperature. Within a few minutes you should feel cold air at the vents. If the air isn’t cold, or the unit short-cycles, or you hear new noises, that’s your early warning — far better to deal with it now than during a heat wave.

Check the thermostat

If you have an older thermostat, fresh batteries prevent a lot of false alarms. If you’re still on a basic dial model, a programmable or smart thermostat can trim your summer bills by easing off when nobody’s home.

Clear the condensate drain

Your AC pulls humidity out of the air — and we have plenty of that — which drains away as water. If that line clogs with algae, it can back up and trip a safety switch or cause a leak. A cup of the line flushed out keeps it flowing.

Book a tune-up
